It’s almost Oscar time…

I am not a dedicated TV viewer, but every year, I will watch the Academy Awards. Some years, I’ve seen every Best Picture nominee. This year, I’ve only seen two (The Artist, and Midnight in Paris. I enjoyed both, but I am torn as to which I would like to see win.)

My fingers are crossed for my pick in the Actress in a Leading Role category. I know there is a lot of competition (Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, et al), but I think Rooney Mara was incredible as Lisbeth Salander. She (and Christopher Plummer) made that film. (Yes, okay, Daniel Craig was quite good too, but I like Michael Nyqvist better as Mikael Blomkvist. I just do.)

I was disappointed to see that the last Harry Potter film hardly made an impact on the Academy voters. Seriously, what does it take to get an awesome film series a nomination? I suppose it would have to a) not be a kids film, and b) not be fantasy. Even LoTR didn’t get a win for Best Picture until the third film, and even then it seemed a bit grudging.

I do have favourite Oscar moments: 1996, when the English Patient won Best Picture; Anna Paquin winning Best Supporting Actress in 1993 for The Piano; watching Bjork in her swan dress (I think that dress was cool, though Dancer in the Dark was a difficult film to watch); Hugh Jackman hosting (so awesome – I want him back for another year), and Marion Cotillard winning Best Actress for her role in La Vie en Rose.

But, having looked over the list of Best Picture nominees, I’m surprised at how few of them I have seen. Or, in some cases, how little I liked or enjoyed the films I did see. (This is of course only pertinent for films nominated from 1994 onwards, given that I was too young to see most films prior to that year, being quite underage.)

For example, in the 1990s, the only year in which I have seen all the nominees (not necessarily in time for that Oscar ceremony, mind you) was 1994, where the nominees were Forrest Gump, Four Weddings & A Funeral, Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show, and the Shawshank Redemption. Most other years, I only average 1 or 2 of the Best Picture nominees. My tastes are not the tastes of the Academy, and that’s another post in itself.

So on Sunday night, I shall don my closest attempt at Lisbeth fashion and keep my fingers crossed.

Rather quiet around here…

You’ll have to forgive the quiet around here. Life’s been catching up with me and I haven’t had much time for a break.

The 30 Days of Secrets event at Bandit Creek Books has wrapped up, but I highly recommend reading some of the excellent posts, and finding out the secrets of the authors.

I’ve begun work as a freelance editor with the Author’s Red Room, a fantastic group devoted to assisting indie authors in their publishing preparation.

And I’ve been reading and researching for my WIP: books on tenement housing in Chicago, and the history of the Irish American gangster; watching films like Public Enemies and Miller’s Crossing; and scheduling a trip to Chicago in the spring.

However, I will be posting more frequently now that life’s smoothed out into something more manageable!

I’m guest blogging all week!

Today I’m guest blogging over at Fiction Fascination, talking about the dynamics of three, and all this week I’m guesting on various blogs in support of my novella, Prohibited Passion. Come visit!
